SAMPLES FOR REVIEW

Which filters deserve a page?

Every filter value could have its own landing page. The question is whether every filter value should. Below are four, built the same way, so the difference you see is the filter and not the design.

DAY-LEVEL — A REAL PAGE

The filter describes the day: where it happens, what it is for, how long the program runs. Selecting it says something true about the brief, so it gets a heart and its own copy. The live site already publishes this set — location, purpose, duration, setting — and nothing else.

ITEM-LEVEL — AN INFO POPOVER

The filter describes an ingredient inside a program: how physical one activity is, how many minutes it runs, who delivers it. Useful while choosing activities, wrong as a destination — a program is a sequence, and its activities differ. These get a popover that explains the term, not a page.

Unique Team Building is a family-run company that has designed and led team programs since 2006 — grown from a lifetime in outdoor education, travel and photography. These pages are the long answer to “who are we dealing with?”

Established 2006 Family-run Brisbane · QLD · Australia-wide A named facilitator on every program

FORTY YEARS IN THE MAKING

Two generations of getting teams outdoors

1980s–00s

Garry Richards leads Outward Bound Australia for 23 years and chairs the Outdoor Recreation Council — helping write the national standards for outdoor education.

2006

Unique Team Building begins in Sydney — father and son, experiential learning meets unique fun.

2018

Headquarters move to Brisbane — programs keep running Australia-wide, remote and overseas.

Today

20 years of programs — and new territory facilitators joining as we grow.

IT STARTED IN THE BUSH

A father who ran Outward Bound. A son with a backpack and a camera.

Garry Richards spent 23 years leading Outward Bound from the banks of the Murrumbidgee. Andy travelled forty countries, founded the tour company UDU and pioneered light-painting photography. In 2007 they joined forces — and Unique Team Building is what happened next.

A wise mind and youthful passion are a powerful combination.

Through the generations, our family has always believed most in experiences

OUR COMMITMENT

You plan with a named lead facilitator who remains accountable from your first conversation through delivery.

Specialist facilitators may lead specific activities — your lead stays accountable end to end.

We borrow beautiful places

“Our planet is beautiful, and we’d like to share it with you, while also doing our best to preserve it.” Our sustainability page lists principles — and only the proof we can currently substantiate.

Calling all unique people

Facilitators, photographers, guides, teachers and entertainers — there’s a standing invitation to join the network that delivers our programs.

CHAPTER 01

It started in the bush…

Our story starts a long time ago, in a beautiful bush town called Tharwa.

We are a family run business — so first things first — embarrassing baby photos…

This is Andy, the youngest of four. He always was a bit different…

CHAPTER 02

Best Dad in the world?

Meet ‘Dad’… for 23 years he was the Executive Director of Outward Bound where we lived on the Murrumbidgee River.

He helped build Australia’s largest Outdoor Education organisation, but most importantly, he took his kids on adventures…

Bushwalking, horse riding, sailing, camping, swimming, 4wding, gardening, travelling, and every sport you can think of.

He even had them sing and dance!

The best playground is the outdoors

CHAPTER 03

Good enough for the Queen

To others though, he was Garry Richards, world leader in Outdoor Education. He was the Chairman of the Outdoor Recreation Council of Australia, and he based his work heavily on research, as well as the philosophies of Kurt Hahn.

For changing so many lives via a not-for-profit organisation, Garry received an Order of Australia Medal.

Garry receiving his Order of Australia Medal (OAM)

CHAPTER 04

To Serve, To Strive, and Not to Yield

After leaving Outward Bound, he started NOELS (National Outdoor Education and Leadership Services) and has continued his research.

He now has six university degrees — with a PhD in psychology — so you can call him Dr Richards, but we like to call him Dad… and you can too.

He’s good for Dad jokes, so we thought its only fair if we embarrass him in return…

‘Dad’ and his dog Pirate, he’s still young (just with less hair!)

CHAPTER 05

There’s another world out there

Andy grew up, travelled to over 40 countries, finished a tourism degree, worked as a 4wd guide around Australia, and created Understand Down Under (UDU). Starting with just a backpack, he was the first to operate guided day tours to the Royal National Park.

UDU grew, bought a mini-bus, and became Advanced Eco-tourism Australia certified. It won numerous awards, and now specialises in private charters for groups from all over the world.

Andy loves exploring the world, and sharing adventures

CHAPTER 06

Fame and photography

Combining a love for the outdoors, photography, and unique fun, UDU became famous in the news for its “Moonwalks”. Andy become a pioneer in long exposure photography, and has even been featured on TV!

Our photos have been seen by millions, via TV, Newspapers, magazines and Instagram

CHAPTER 07

Youth and experience combine

It was time to bring it all back home. Andy started doing team building events in 2007, and Dad basically wrote the book on experiential learning and outdoor standards. We had the experience and we’ll both always be young at heart, it was logical to join forces.

A wise mind and youthful passion are a powerful combination.

“Till we find our place, on the path unwinding…”

CHAPTER 08

Our first retreat is magic

Our stars were aligned and we were very privileged to share an adventure with a fantastic group of people, Marque Lawyers. We’ll let them recall the details:

UDU changed our lives! They took a bunch of lawyers under their wing and a long way out of our comfort zone, on a tailor-made weekend experience that included canoeing, trekking, climbing, swimming, competitive cooking, partying on the beach, sleeping under the stars and waking to a glorious sunrise and the smell of bacon and eggs. What made the difference was Andy and the UDU team, who had thought of everything, planned immaculately, were endlessly attentive and are just the nicest group of people you could meet. They were completely committed to the goal of giving us an unforgettable experience, and they delivered.

Michael — Director of MARQUE Lawyers

We were hooked, we knew this is where we belonged.

An adventurous one and a half day retreat

CHAPTER 09

This is our dream

We consider ourselves lucky to be doing what we love. It just so happens that a passion for the outdoors, experiential education, travel, games and photography makes a perfect mix for Team Building.

Our dream is to pass this on to our next generation of adventurers (stay tuned for that chapter!).

Through the generations, our family has always believed most in experiences

CHAPTER 10

Our beliefs keep us going

We value integrity, hard work, diversity and the potential of humanity. Our planet is beautiful, and we’d like to share it with you, while also doing our best to preserve it. Especially Australia… gum trees and vegemite certainly make us happy.

Our mission is for you to receive the best possible return on your investment, by ensuring we listen to your needs and deliver quality, memorable experiences. Your people are your best asset, they deserve the best attention, which can sometimes simply be the best rewards.

The world is a marvellous place. There’s joy in discovering this together.

CHAPTER 11

We’ve got the goods

We don’t just have the know-how, we’ve also got some unique practical advantages. Having Tour Operator Accreditation, National Parks licensing and connections in tourism means that we can offer adventures from your office door to beyond.

We want to be with you the whole way.

We take pride in all we do, and make sure we do things the right way

CHAPTER 12

We focus on

In this day-and-age, workplaces often book a quick corporate event without knowing what their team needs. Although icebreakers have a place, often more than a ‘band-aid’ solution is required.

A full day or longer away from the office can make a massive difference, the extra time is worth it. Taking groups to unique environments is our specialty.

We’re only interested in groups where we can deliver an experience that is personal, enjoyable and meaningful to every individual. Large groups and generic activities is not what we do. We don’t do team building thats forced… eye-rolling is not good.

The aim is for your team to feel a sense of belonging with one-another, and to share the same vision.

We focus on the strengths that make us unique

CHAPTER 13

We’ve had help from friends

We’ve come a long way, and there’s more than just the two of us. We’re grateful for the support from our friends and family, and we enjoy working with a diverse range of talented people.

We are well aware that it all boils down to “who you get on the day”. So we’ve surrounded ourselves with some impressive people. .

Great people deliver great experiences.

We’re lucky to be surrounded by some amazing people

CHAPTER 14

We’d like to meet you

Hopefully you now have an idea of who we are and what we’re about, so that’s enough from us.

What we’d really like, is to hear more about you.

What’s your story? Who are the personalities that make up your workplace?

CHAPTER 15

It’ll be easy

We know you’re short on time, so we’ve made the process simple:

  1. Enquiry — we listen to your needs
  2. Consultation — we discuss the best solution with you
  3. Delivery — we put our planning into practice

We listen.

That simple promise hasn’t changed — today the journey runs through your brief.

CHAPTER 16

Hopefully see you soon

We’re all humans looking for meaning and enjoyment in life. Smart businesses realise this. When work colleagues turn into a happy family, incredible things happen.

Let our family make that possible.

We love what we do, and we hope to escape with you soon…

Common questions

A named lead facilitator plans with you from the first conversation and remains accountable through delivery. On the day, they lead the program with the crew your group size and activities call for.

Often, yes — larger groups and deeper workshop days run with extra facilitators. Your lead coordinates them; you never have to manage a roster of strangers.

Some activities are led by specialist facilitators or run in collaboration with a trusted supplier — that’s marked on the activity itself. Your named lead stays accountable for the whole program either way.

By territory and program fit — once your brief shows where and roughly what, the right lead picks it up and introduces themselves. In South East Queensland, that’s usually Andy.

WHAT STAYS BACKSTAGE

A big program library, venue knowledge and supplier relationships sit behind those five steps.

You only ever see a conversation. The complexity — matching activities to group sizes, holding venues, rostering crew, weather plans — is our job, not yours.

And what we don’t do:

{{dn}}

A person reads every brief.

Where this way of working comes from

Two generations of outdoor education and eco-tourism sit behind the five steps — not a sales playbook.

Outward Bound heritage

Garry Richards led Outward Bound Australia for 23 years and helped write national outdoor-education standards.

He holds a doctorate in experiential learning and an OAM for service to outdoor education — the debrief discipline in every program traces back to that work.

Eco-tourism roots

The company grew from an award-winning eco-tour operation — guiding real experiences is the founding craft.

Andrew guided 4WD trips across Australia and travelled more than forty countries before bringing that field-craft to corporate programs.

Licensed operations

Tour Operator Accreditation and National Parks licensing sit behind how we access the places we use.

Permits, risk plans and operator agreements are held and renewed by us, so the places in your brief are places we can genuinely run a program in.

Six practical principles

One simple test sits under every program decision: if an activity can’t be run responsibly in that place, we change the activity — or the place.

Eco-tourism heritage. The business grew from an award-winning eco-tourism background — we're not currently certified, and we say so, but we still run every program by those same principles.

Licensed operations. Tour Operator Accreditation and National Parks licensing sit behind how we access and treat the places we use. Source: current About pages.

Giving programs you can book today. Charity and CSR team programs are live in our builder — like the Charity Bike Build. Source: this prototype’s program library.

WHAT WE DON’T YET PUBLISH

Carbon measurements, offset claims, third-party sustainability certifications for Unique Team Building itself, or partner-wide guarantees. Nothing appears here until it’s verified — this page grows only as evidence does.

GIVING BACK, PRICED FAIRLY

Charity & CSR programs share the value with the cause.

These formats are structured so part of what you invest lands with the cause itself — bikes, hampers, trees, donations — rather than all going to program margin. We keep our facilitation share lean on giving formats, because the handover is the point. The exact structure is shown in your proposal before you commit.

How it shows up:

Materials and donations itemised transparently · reduced facilitation pricing on giving formats · an outcome your team hands over on the day.

3-day conference retreat · Blue Mountains, NSW · Published August 2017

THE BRIEF

Service Today is a rapidly growing business. Having exceeded their previous long term goals, it was time for their management team to create a new “Big Hairy Audacious Goal” (using the Rhythm System framework). They contacted us to package together a 3 day conference retreat, to include one day of adventurous activities and two days of conference hosting.

WHERE WE STARTED

With our operator accreditation, we picked up interstate staff from the Airport and then the rest of the Management team from Service Today’s Head Office. The first stop was a remote clifftop in the Blue Mountains.

HOW THE PROGRAM CAME TOGETHER

After morning tea and intros, we were straight into the abseiling. Starting small, the team was soon conquering 25m vertical drops- although with the valley 100ms of metres below, it definitely felt much higher! One of the ultimate tests of trust, it was great to see Service Today staff supporting each other to overcome their fears.

Abseiling- Team Building with a view!

We then continued with an exploration of the Blue Mountains, getting a best of the sights by visiting some key lookouts and learning about the Darug culture, local history, flora and fauna. We checked into our exclusive accommodation, which was full of country charm; warm and homely. That night we organised an “Iron Chef Cooking Challenge”, and wow did the teams deliver! A desert incorporating the company colours may have decided the win.

For the next two days we provided support services to ensure that Service Today could get the best results from their strategy sessions. This included preparing facilities, catering (a great breakfast always means the best start for the day), and energiser activities. The energisers were a great way to have a break between sessions, get the blood pumping and have some fun, while also addressing some developmental outcomes which linked in with their agenda items. These included communication, getting to know each other better, and prioritising.

The final dinner had a homely and gourmet feel to it, and was followed by fairy lights and night photography. Painting with light is always a fun way to get creative. We captured some great Service Today branding shots, as well as some ‘muck around’ individual photos.

Team Abseiling in the Blue Mountains

Keep this story for later, or take its ideas as a head start.

THE RESULT

It was a real honour to assist Service Today as they set their sights towards a new and exciting future. Their feedback was the result we were striving for:

Unique Team Building provided an efficient, professional and friendly service throughout our company retreat. They were very helpful in all aspects of the planning and delivery of the program and customised it to our exact requirements. Andy went above and beyond what was required to ensure all staff enjoyed their experience and the event was delivered smoothly.

Discuss Strategies For Providing And Accepting Constructive Criticism To Enhance Team Performance.

In any team environment, feedback is crucial for growth and improvement. However, the way feedback is given and received can make a significant difference in its effectiveness. Constructive criticism, when delivered and accepted properly, can enhance team performance, foster transparency, and build a stronger, more collaborative work culture. Let’s explore how to give and receive constructive criticism in a team setting.

Constructive criticism is a powerful tool for personal and professional development. It involves offering feedback in a way that is supportive and aimed at improvement rather than demoralising. In a team, the right approach to constructive criticism can lead to enhanced performance, better communication, and a more cohesive group. This blog will discuss strategies for providing and accepting constructive criticism, focusing on transparency and effective communication.

The Importance Of Constructive Criticism

Constructive criticism is essential in any team dynamic. It helps identify areas for improvement and encourages growth. Without it, teams might stagnate, and individuals may not reach their full potential.

  • Improving performance — constructive criticism highlights specific areas where improvement is needed, and provides clear guidance on how to enhance skills and performance.
  • Fostering transparency — a culture of open feedback promotes honesty and transparency. Team members feel safe to express their thoughts and concerns, leading to better problem-solving and innovation.

Strategies For Giving Constructive Criticism

Providing constructive criticism effectively requires careful consideration and a structured approach. Here are some key strategies:

BE SPECIFIC AND FOCUSED

General feedback can be confusing and unhelpful. Be specific about what needs improvement and why.

  • Provide clear examples — instead of saying, “You need to improve your presentations,” say, “Your presentation could be more effective with more data to support your points.”
  • Focus on behaviour, not personality — criticise actions and behaviours, not the individual’s character. For example, “Your report was incomplete” is better than “You’re not thorough.”
A full-width frame runs the whole measure — the widest of the three standard sizes.

USE THE “SANDWICH” METHOD

The “sandwich” method helps balance positive and negative feedback, making it easier for the receiver to accept and act on the criticism.

  • Start with positive feedback — begin with something positive to set a supportive tone.
  • Offer constructive criticism — clearly state the areas that need improvement.
  • End with encouragement — conclude with positive reinforcement or encouragement to motivate the individual.

Strategies For Receiving Constructive Criticism

Receiving criticism can be challenging, but it’s an essential part of professional growth. Here are some strategies to receive feedback effectively:

STAY OPEN-MINDED

Approach feedback with an open mind and a willingness to improve. Remember, the goal is to help you grow.

  • Listen carefully — pay attention to what is being said without interrupting. Take notes if necessary to remember specific points.
  • Avoid defensive reactions — it’s natural to feel defensive, but try to stay calm and listen objectively. Ask clarifying questions if you need more information.

SEEK CLARITY AND ACTIONABLE STEPS

Ensure you fully understand the feedback and know how to implement the suggested changes.

  • Ask for specific examples — if the feedback is vague, ask for specific instances to better understand the issue.
  • Request actionable suggestions — ask for clear, actionable steps to improve. This will make it easier to implement the feedback.

“Feedback is the breakfast of champions.”

— Ken Blanchard

Creating A Culture Of Transparency

Transparency is vital for constructive criticism to be effective. When team members feel that the feedback process is open and honest, they are more likely to engage positively with it.

ENCOURAGE OPEN COMMUNICATION

  • Regular check-ins — hold regular team meetings to discuss progress and address any concerns.
  • Anonymous feedback channels — provide anonymous ways for team members to give feedback if they are uncomfortable doing so directly.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE

  • Model constructive criticism — demonstrate how to give and receive feedback constructively. Your actions will set the standard for the team.
  • Be transparent — share your own experiences with feedback and how it has helped you grow. This can encourage others to view criticism positively.

Practical Techniques For Effective Feedback Sessions

Using structured techniques can make feedback sessions more productive and less stressful.

ONE-ON-ONE MEETINGS

  • Scheduled sessions — regularly scheduled one-on-one meetings ensure that feedback is timely and continuous.
  • Focused discussions — use these meetings to focus on specific issues without distractions.

STRUCTURED FEEDBACK FORMS

  • Feedback templates — provide templates that include sections for positive feedback, areas for improvement, and actionable steps.
  • Documentation — keep a record of feedback sessions to track progress over time and refer back to if needed.

Conclusion

Constructive criticism, when done right, can transform a team’s performance and foster a culture of continuous improvement. It requires transparency, specific and focused feedback, and an open-minded approach to receiving criticism. By implementing these strategies, teams can turn feedback into a powerful tool for growth and success.

CONCLUSION LESSON

  • Be specific: provide clear, focused feedback.
  • Use the “sandwich” method: balance positive and negative feedback.
  • Stay open-minded: approach feedback with a willingness to learn.
  • Encourage transparency: promote open communication and lead by example.
  • Use practical techniques: structure feedback sessions for maximum effectiveness.

Constructive criticism is not just about pointing out faults but about guiding each other towards improvement and success. Embrace it, and watch your team thrive.
